willing to lose your seat over your position on gun control. what was your response on to the nra news conference that we saw just yesterday? >> well, richard, i thought it was stunningly insense i hativet is how i felt. the idea that the only approach to gun violence is gun fights is just not the way this country should, i think see itself. i know most americans don't see the wild, wild with west returning to the united states. but that is what they suggested. and the idea that they were making meaningful -- meaningful contributions, the only meaningful contribution i saw was to the gun manufacturers by way of free advertising. you know, they do what they have been doing a long time. that is come up with every excuse, except looking at the incredible saturation of guns in the society. and i saw statistics today of the 62 mass murders in the united states over the last 30 years, not one of them has been stopped by an armed civilian. and in columbine, there were two armed individuals that tried to stop it and couldn't. so, their answer has never been the answer and it's not the answer n

this. your reaction to the nra and you heard of lapierre's statement to the nra. what's your thought on the plan put out there to put guns in schools. >> first, richard, thank you for having me. my reaction to the statement yesterday is that i'm disappointed, but not surprised, candidly, and i think we have to stay very focused here and not be put off by the kind of distraction that was put forth yesterday. we certainly need to have concrete plans to make sure our schools are safe, but the notion of adding more guns as a solution is wrong minded and we shouldn't be distracted by the comments yesterday. this is what i believe they were. >> how practical is the idea put forth? the department of labor saying that the average salary for a police officer is about $55,000. there's about 100,000 public schools across the country and it would mean $5 billion if the plan were to be carried out. >> i don't think there's anything more precious than our kids so we do need to make sure that we change and have plans to address school safety, but i don't believe that yesterday was a serious
